Overview
Ornamental Aluminum Fence is available in a wide variety of styles. These styles are generally configured into residential, commercial and industrial specification grades with actual specifications of materials varying by manufacturer. The fence sections are manufactured in widths from 6′ to 8′ and are available in 3′ – 10′ heights. Colors offered by manufacturers can vary with most offering the “trifecta” of standard colors; Black, White & Bronze with some adding Green, Brown, Beige and Sandstone to the mix. There are also many accessories and accents available enabling you to personalize your aluminum fence installation.
Ornamental Aluminum Gates are fabricated to match the chosen section style or may be arched. Most ornamental aluminum gate installations by Infinity Fence Inc. come standard with Tru-Close Hinge upgrades and a top pull Magna Latch. Double swing gates are available for wide openings or property entryways and can be accented with Swag Arches or with a full opening Rainbow arch. As with aluminum ornamental sections, gates are also available with many of the same accessory options.
As with any fence installation, location and application usage should always be considered. No matter it’s type or style, it is also beneficial that you have a proposal presented to you providing the complete scope of your project as well as all material specifications for the project. While product manufacturers have material specifications available to view on their sites and brochures, the usage and configurations of these materials will be customized for your particular installation and may vary from one fence installation company to another.
Aluminum Fence History
The aluminum and steel fences we currently refer to as “Ornamental ” were originally built from a mixture of iron and other materials and were heat forged by blacksmiths dating as far back as the Middle Ages. These types of fences can truly be referred to as Wrought Iron Fences. They can, and have, lasted hundreds of years and can still be found across Europe and in some of our older cities. To this day, there are still a few craftsmen to be found that produce wrought iron fence and products of this great beauty….and expense.
In the mid 1800’s “mild steel” was introduced and this less expensive material ultimately was the demise of the “true” wrought iron fence. While people still referred to these steel fences as wrought iron, in truth they had more in common with today’s steel ornamental fences than the wrought iron products that preceded them.
On to the mid to late 1900’s and the introduction of the aluminum ornamental fence. A lightweight, rust free product that boasted maintenance free qualities and a less expensive price to produce, thus resulting in a lower user end cost. While slow to catch on, within 10 years of it’s introduction, consumer popularity grew and thus lead to the growth of new manufacturers and suppliers worldwide.
Which brings us to today. Aluminum ornamental fence sales and installations have grown to where they make up a very large part of the fence installation market. There are hundreds of manufacturers worldwide offering different styles, colors, grades, processes and ultimately, quality. While the ornamental aluminum fences of today may not withstand the same test of time the wrought iron fences of centuries past, they will last a lifetime and beyond, adding beauty and security to any home, office or commercial application.
Aluminum Fence Sections
There are many different styles of ornamental aluminum fence that are available including those with arched and decorative tops, though there are four fence styles that seemingly make up the majority that customers choose to have installed. With many manufacturers, each with their own name or number classifications, these four styles, pictured below, are the most common styles chosen, accompanied by their Elite Fence Product names.
Horizontal rails positions and spacings can vary among manufacturers and can also be altered to fit a particular installation. A standard alteration is dropping the bottom rail so that the pickets do not protrude through the rail. This is commonly referred to as a drop rail style of fence and is typically done on 54″ heights to meet pool codes, though it can be done to any height, style or grade, and we have. As well, a 54″ tall section can also have protuding pickets through the bottom rail like the classic styles above.
Picket spacings vary from about 3-13/16″ to 4″ on standard grades with 1-5/8″ spacing available to meet small animal containment and 3″ to meet daycare codes. Puppy picket sections are designed to keep small pets contained without the extra picket extending fully to the top of the section. Decorative accessory accents are also available that can enhance the already spectacular look of an ornamental fence such as finials, scrolls, rings and post caps.
Ornamental aluminum fence specifications are typically categorized as Residential, Commercial or Industrial with specific dimensions and wall thicknesses varying from one manufacturer to another. Remember, just because a manufacturer has provided specifications for materials manufactured, your installation configuration may be designed using a variation of these specifications, which is why we recommend that your proposals include a detailed accounting of the materials being used for your installation.
Aluminum Gates
Standard gates are constructed of welded aluminum frames and are built to match the sections rail and picket style. The “U”-framed gate, standard issue for most Infinity Fence Inc. installations, provides added support to the structure of the gate. Gate tops can match the sections being flat or arched with double drive gate arches being either a double, rainbow or swag arch. Gate frames, can be custom fabricated to “skew” to the lay of the land (though arched gates can not be skewed).
While we prefer to use a U-framed gate frames when possible, not all manufactureres offer this style of build. Many times we find that gates and their accompanying hardware are just installed with what companies prefer to offer, as opposed to the best available option for the installation. We here at Infinity Fence Inc. will make sure you get the proper gate and hardware for the proper application.
Hardware
While many choices exist for gate hardware usage, the most common way to hinge your gate is using either the standard spring loaded hinges that most manufacturers supply with the gates, or upgrading to D&D Technologies, Tru-Close Hinges. The standard hinges that most manufactures supply do the job, but are not easily adjusted (nor worth the attempt to do so). They may also close quite sharply when new, and fail to do so over time. Tru-Close hinges easily adjust allowing you to add or release the self closing tension on your gates. We here at Infinity Fence Inc. upgrade all gate hinges to Tru-Close (where applicable), giving you the premium gate operation and reliability you would expect from an ornamental aluminum gate. If you like, one could take it a step further and install D&D Sure Close hydrolic self closing hinges which are avaialable in standard and self closing models.
Gate latches are quite varied, with an abundance of choices. Our standard latch is the top pull Magna Latch which offers magnetic latching and a keyed lock for added safety. If your gate leads to a pool, needs added safety or you have a “Houdini Hound”, the top-pull Magna Latch is a must. Other commonly used latching options include the Ornamag Latch, Lokk Latch Deluxe and Stanard Lokk Latch, all of which are available upon request.
Aluminum Fence Accessories
Along with the Ball Top, which is offered by most companies as the alternative to the standard flat cap, there are many after market alternatives including solar accented post top lighting. Picket tops on sections and gates can be upgraded to the Quad, Fleur-De_lis & Tri Finials adding a more classic “old-world” look to your fence and gates. Small scrolls or rings between rails and pickets even further accent your fence.
Aluminum Fence Colors
The three basic colors for all aluminum fence manufacturers are black, white & bronze with the bronze colors ranging from an antique bronze to off brown color.
